All in all, civil disobedience has been proven effective time and time again throughout history. It has been used to gain equality for discriminated people, change government and public policy, and earn acceptance for groups that were not well tolerated by society. Rosa Parks raised awareness to the equal rights movement for colored people by civilly disobeying to give up her seat to a white man. In addition, fourteen college students used it to gain the support of over four hundred citizens and convince the government to return Alcatraz to the American Indians rather than turning it into a national park. Also, Harvey Milk utilized civil disobedience, both, to gain equal rights and social acceptance of the LGBT community. In each of these examples, protest was successful in reaching the groups’ goals and was conducted without using violence.
